Looking at it now, I think there is a smattering of the dislike for the development of jargon for the prime purpose of exclusion of others or easing the pretence of secret knowledge. With that in mind, I'd rather doubt such languages would support imaginitive discourse as their aim is to belittle, not aid, their users. They also create "us-and-them" groups even within Granbretten's socety itself (divide and conquor - and then keep them divided). Not sure that would go down well with any shamans out there, but it was my take regardless. Their 'animalistic' nature go the opposite way to anthropomorphism: humans becoming less than human all through the great and mighty empire. In the Hawkmoon novels, is the secret language used by the Dark Empire Orders meant to be a complete language, or is it more of a code, or is it a language that only has enough words to express military commands and such?I recall when I read it thinking that it was a linguistic addition/equivalent to the masks.

I would love to know where such a vibrant and inspirational charecter came from. My question for Mike is this, what was the inspiration for Count Brass, a real life person like Jerry Cornelius? a personal hero ( as Lobkowitz seems to be)? the only charecter he "feels" like is the Ursine prince who goes adventuring with Flamadan (cant remember his name atm ) Count Brass stands out like dogs bollocks (in a good way though) In that he doesn't seem to be an obvious incarnation of the EC, though the impression is that he would hand Dorian his ass on a plate if he wanted to, and he doesnt seem to have the feel of a companion.

Even Bowgentle is mirrored in some of the Avuncular and wise charecters like the Ursine princes. Also, of the companions there always seems to be a recognizeble "charecter" that transfers from companion to companion, there is a bit of Moonglum in Jerry O'connel. In nearely all of the stories the Champion is arguably the greatest warrior of his (or hers, don't forget the Champion of Garathorm) age (or 1 of a matched pair, i.e. Count Brass has always struck me as anomolous in the Eternal Champion cycle.
